Abstract:

This paper aims to review, following the theory of art, Cuban author Jorge Mañach’s book Historia y estilo, written in 1944. Following a hermeneutic approach, the essays contained in his volume are analysed to identify both the method used and the historiographic paradigm the author employed. Electivism is the method that articulates his proposal, and is revealed in the notions it borrows from other sciences. In this line, Long Duration is the historiographic paradigm he uses to reflect upon the evolution of style. Thus, the foundations of a theory of historical circumstantiality of style are set in Historia y estilo, of 1944.

Keywords: Jorge Mañach, theory of art, electivism, Long Duration, cultural essay.
