Base on his own experience in Cartagena de Indias and in the literature of his time,Alonso de Sandoval was a Jesuits priest who wrote in the first half of the seventeenthcentury a book titled De Instauranda Athiopum Salute. His work constitutes one of theearliest and more systematic sources for the scholars interested on afrodescendents in theAmericas. This article describes the two editions and the main characteristics of his work,as well as its criteria of authority.
